Wineries and Vineyards

New Zealand’s Matakana Coast is home to many boutique wineries that are small and family owned. They give our visitors an intimate opportunity to share the passion and products with the winemakers. Most have wine-tasting available and some of the larger ones e.g. Ascension and Heron’s Flight also have first class restaurants for lunch or dinner.

Some of the vineyards that are within easy reach of Cedarhouse Bed and Breakfast are listed below:

• Ascension Vineyard
  A family vineyard run by a 5th generation of winemakers making small quantities of highly sought after wine. Ascension is a Spanish style winery in a stunning setting of vineyards and a background of magnificent native bush with a sunny courtyard café and first class restaurant serving brunch/lunch (no evening meals unless specifically advertised). Open 7 days for wine-tasting. Full conference and wedding facilities. Ascension is a one minute drive (or a short walk!) from Cedarhouse B&B. • Matakana Estate
  Matakana Estate is just a two minute drive from Cedarhouse B&B however there are no longer any wine tasting facilities here.
• Heron’s Flight Vineyard
  Sit in the heritage garden to sample the Sangiovese and Dolcetto wines this vineyard is known for. Visit the new “Eco” building for wine tasting with wine education area and library. Heron’s Flight is just a four minute drive away. You can visit their website at www.heronsflight.co.nz.
• Hinchco Family Vineyard
  Situated a short four minute drive from Cedarhouse B&B, the Hinchco Family Vineyard is a family owned and operated vineyard renowned for their Merlots and Rosé. No winery visits are possible but wines are available from “Taste” in Warkworth Village. See www.hinchcowines.co.nz for details.
• Hyperion Wines
  Taste an elegant Bordeaux red, a Pinot Gris, Chardonnay or a charming Pinot Noir in the original old cowshed-turned-winery. Meet the winemaker in Matakana’s oldest winery. Hyperion Wines is an eight minute drive from Cedarhouse B&B. Their website is www.hyperion-wines.co.nz.
• Mahurangi River Winery
  An eight minute drive from Cedarhouse, nestled in a secluded valley between the Mahurangi River and Kawau Bay, you’ll discover Mahurangi River Winery. Call them on +64 9 422 3026 to arrange a tasting of their hand made Chardonnay, Syrah and Bordeaux style reds. They also have a café with brunch and lunch menu. • Ransom Wines
  Ransom’s winery building with views over the vineyard makes a great atmosphere for tasting wine and demolishing one of their scrumptious platters. Ransom Wines is ten minutes away from Cedarhouse B&B. Visit their website at www.ransomwines.co.nz.
• Brick Bay Wines
  Overlooking the magnificent Kawau Bay, Brick Bay Wines is a small family vineyard with unique terroir producing sought after red and white wines. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec and Pinot Gris. Also home to a beautiful purpose built tasting facility, restaurant, and a magnificent sculpture walk though the gardens, bush and wetlands. A 15 minute drive from Cedarhouse B&B. • Takatu Vineyard
  Renowned for their Pinot Gris and Merlot. Tastings by appointment. Takatu Vineyard is a 15 minute drive away from us. Visit their website at www.takatuwine.co.nz.
• Contour Estate
  A boutique winery specialising in the production of premium quality Syrah. This low-cropping vineyard combines hand harvesting with traditional winemaking methods. Website: www.contourestate.co.nz.
• Omaha Bay Vineyard
  The popular tasting room has spectacular views out over the Hauraki Gulf to Little Barrier Island. Enjoy handcrafted award winning wines with a platter of fresh local food. See www.omahabay.co.nz for further details.
• Leigh Sawmill Brewing Company
  If it’s not wine you are into but beer, this is where you need to be to quaff batch-brewed natural beer at it’s best. Website: www.sawmillbrewery.co.nz.
